Restaurant listing guidelines

TripAdvisor Support -

To qualify as a restaurant on TripAdvisor, a business MUST meet the following criteria:

  • Must serve prepared food
  • Must be open to the public
  • Must be open for at least 6 months of the year
    • Seasonal restaurants may be listed at the editors’ discretion.
  • Must be stationary
    • Food trucks may be listed as long as their schedule and locations are posted online. Submissions must include a valid URL for confirmation.

The following do NOT qualify as a restaurant on TripAdvisor:

  • Delivery only
  • Catering
  • Personal chefs
  • Banquet/wedding venues
  • Pop-up restaurants
  • Food courts (we list individual restaurants inside the food court)
  • Bars/pubs that only serve bar snacks (pretzels, crackers, nuts, etc.)
  • Places that only serve drinks
  • Places that only sell unprepared food
  • Places where you eat a meal while watching a performance
    • These are Things To Do in the Theater & Concerts category (Dinner Theaters, specifically)
  • When you eat a meal while riding a train or a boat
    • These are Things To Do in the Tours & Activities category (Rail Tours or Boat Tours, respectively)

The following DO qualify as a restaurant on TripAdvisor:

  • Sit down
  • Take away
  • Cafes/coffee shops that sell prepared food (sandwiches, muffins, etc.)
  • Bars/pubs that serve prepared food (burgers, fries, etc.)
  • Chain restaurants
  • Sandwich shops
  • Tapas
  • Diners
  • Ice cream shops
  • Dessert/pastry shops
  • Food trucks as long as their schedule and locations are posted online
  • Restaurants inside other businesses (for example, a restaurant inside a retail store or a restaurant inside a hotel)
  • Supermarkets that have a prepared food section and tables where you can dine
